Authorities say a mother will face murder and
attempted murder charges in a double stabbing in a
Paterson apartment that left her 7-year-old son dead and her 17-year-old son wounded.
According to Passaic County prosecutors, police
were called to the third-floor unit on North 6th Street Saturday just
after 7 a.m. and found the two juveniles with stab wounds.
Prosecutors say both were rushed to
St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, where they say the 7-year-old was
pronounced dead. The victims’ mother, Iris Tolentino, 46, is behind bars.
The 17-year-old was treated and
released. A third brother, a 15-year-old also in the unit, was unharmed.
Mayor Andrew Sayegh says the
7-year-old was a victim of domestic violence.
“An alarming act of violence that
turned into an unspeakable tragedy and we lost a 7-year-old young man,”
Sayegh says.
Police said the woman resisted
arrest and caused minor injuries to two officers, prosecutors say. She also
faces aggravated assault.
