American Airlines is adding five minutes to boarding times starting this spring.

The change, effective May 1, applies to all domestic flights, the airline announced.

A spokesperson said the extra time aims to ease congestion caused by pauses between boarding groups.

It’s also intended to reduce gate-checked carry-ons and give flight attendants more time to stow bags in overhead bins, improving the boarding process for passengers.
