An alleged plan to steal from the city of Newark has run out of gas.

At least eight city workers are accused of stealing from the city, including more than $17,000 worth of gas.

The investigation of the workers began two months ago on a tip from other city workers. Six employees were arrested, while two more are being sought. The majority of the suspects work in the Department of Sanitation.

A city investigation found five of the workers allegedly used city-issued cards to get gas at city-owned pumps. Investigators say one suspect, Eric Brown, allowed civilians to use the city-issued cards as well.

One sanitation worker is accused of trying to take out a loan using the name of the city?s director of health and human services. Officials also say a worker from the Parks Division stole cancer donations from the city.

City officials expect more arrests in the case.
