State police in New Jersey captured a third bank robbery suspect in a Branchburg motel parking lot Friday, one day after the fatal shooting of an FBI agent. Police had already arrested Wilfredo Berrios and Michael Cruz, both of New Brunswick, and were searching for Francisco Herrera-Genao, who they said escaped on foot. State police Superintendent Rick Fuentes says a woman's 911 call about a man who tried to break into her car led police to the suspect. According to Fuentes, Herrera-Genao asked an approaching trooper to "please shoot me, please kill me."
According to police, Herrera-Genao was found wearing only sweatpants. They say he was not wearing any shoes. The suspect was compliant in his surrender, which police attribute in part to the cold temperatures he endured overnight.
Special Agent Barry Lee Bush died Thursday after his team shot at the robbery suspects outside a PNC bank in Readington. The FBI said the suspects never fired and it appears Bush was shot by an accidental discharge from an agent's weapon.
The FBI said through a statement released Thursday night, "Preliminarily, information suggests the agent may have beenfatally wounded as a result of the accidental discharge of anotheragent's weapon during a dynamic arrest situation."
The FBI said Bush was searching for suspects connected to at least four bank robberies. Those suspects fired assault rifles while inside banks during some of those robberies. According to the FBI, the suspects captured near the Readington bank Thursday had two assault rifles and a handgun with them.
Captured suspect Cruz claimed the men were preparing to rob the Readington bank, according to a criminal complaint released by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
