(09/25/06) NEWARK ? The Department of Homeland Security is about to relax its self-proclaimed ?blunt? airplane restrictions on liquids and gels.

The department initially banned all types of liquids from carry-on luggage after a suspected plot to blow-up airliners was thwarted in Britain. Police say that plot would have involved the use of liquid explosives smuggled on planes. Six weeks later, Homeland Security will once again allow some liquids back on planes. Travel-size liquid and gel items have now been given the green light, but they must be able to fit in a clear, one-quart Ziploc plastic bag.

Certain cosmetics, such as lipstick, and beverages from the airport?s secure zones will also be allowed back on aircraft. Many travelers say the relaxation of the rules will make their lives much easier. However, others wonder if the move will put flyers in danger. The revised restrictions will go into effect Tuesday.
