In addition to accepting responsibility for May?s Pine Barrens wildfire, the U.S. Air Force has paid to fix homes damaged in the incident.
Residents in Barnegat Township said their lives were torn apart by the wildfire, which burned more than 17,000 acres. Many said their communities are almost rebuilt and back to normal. They are relieved the military has accepted responsibility and helped in the aftermath.
Some homes were destroyed, while others were severely damaged. Resident Joseph Magray said his home needed a new roof and new siding.
?I put it through my insurance and my insurance company is going to deal with the military,? Magray said. ?The military has been very good. They?ve had officers here several times checking things out and everything.?
Neighbors said the Air Force has paid for all of the new replacement homes as well. All of the fire victims should be in their new homes in three to four weeks.
On Thursday, the military concluded the wildfire was caused by pilot error. In a report, the Air Force stated a pilot was flying too low when he dropped flares on an extremely dry day.
