Part of the roof over the rear kennels at the Associated Humane Societies of Newark collapsed following this weekend's snowstorm, displacing more than 30 dogs.
“The snow accumulation from a neighboring building fell on top of the rear end of our kennels, completely collapsing the roof," said Olivia Gonzalez, the shelter's social media coordinator.
A staff member who was working late Sunday night said they heard “a tremendous loud, crashing bang” when the roof collapsed.
Officials say no animals or staff members were injured. The damage comes as the shelter is already taking care of more than 150 pets, making space extremely limited.
“The sudden loss of this critical kennel space is devastating,” the AHS said.
The shelter is looking for foster homes for dogs that are 40 pounds or over.
“Every dog in the building is going to be available for people to foster," Gonzalez said. "We're happy to place any dog with any family. We have dogs of all different shapes and sizes, good with dogs, good with kids.”
Officials say these placements are temporary, lasting 2-4 weeks while repairs are completed.
Those who are willing to foster the animals can email rescue coordinator Sherri Laraway or click here to apply.
