Shelter officials say Firefox was left inside a crate, unable to walk and frail from starvation.
They say his Body Condition Score is 1, the lowest possible rating before death.
The person responsible for abandoning Firefox remains at large.
Firefox is in need of physical therapy and round-the-clock monitoring.
The shelter is seeking donations for his recovery.
