‘A lot of people lost faith’: Jersey City to set aside $10 million to help out local businesses

Officials in Jersey City announced plans this morning to help out local struggling businesses to rebound from the coronavirus pandemic, setting aside $10 million to help the community.

Officials in Jersey City announced plans Thursday morning to help out local struggling businesses to rebound from the coronavirus pandemic, setting aside $10 million to help the community.

The money will be used to help youth programs, nonprofits and arts in the community, with a majority helping struggling small businesses.

Jake Gergues and his family have owned the American Laundromat on West Side Avenue in Jersey City for three generations. His business has dropped 40% during the pandemic.

"A lot of people lost faith, especially the mom and pop operations,” says Gergues. “We've been here literally over 50 years."

City and county leaders announced as part of $117 million in Federal Cares Act Money allocated to Hudson County, $7 million will go to small businesses of 25 employees or less in Jersey City.
Gergues says he plans to apply for the grant to help his business. City officials say come July 16, owners can apply on the Jersey City EDC website.
