Three people were hospitalized Wednesday after failed attempts to save an elderly Jersey City woman from a fire.
The flames broke out on the 100 block of Second Avenue near Manila Avenue. Alysia Rivera, 91, died in her bedroom from smoke inhalation.
Claudio Yanez, a five-year veteran firefighter and the husband of Rivera's granddaughter, made the grisly discovery.
Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the fire. Rivera had been using an oxygen tank to breathe and officials believe the tank may have caused the fire to spread quickly.
The injured responders were taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where they were treated and released.
