A 9-year-old girl from Ocean County is being praised for saving her mother’s life after a seizure.
Jessica Canada suffered from a seizure disorder, but hadn’t had one in more than 23 years. However, she says that a few weeks ago she felt one come on while she was brushing her daughter’s hair.
“It was almost like I had an out-of-body experience, I was watching myself brush my daughter’s hair and I felt kind of funny,” she says. “The next thing I know, I woke up in an ambulance.”
Jessica says she suffered a grand mal seizure. But luckily her daughter Keira was close by.
“I was nervous for what to do, but I know what I had to do was call 911,” Keira says.
Keira spoke with the 911 operator, while also keeping her 6-year-old twin sisters calm.
“It was very scary for me,” Keira says.
Jessica says that her daughter’s quick thinking was all thanks to a chart the family keeps on the refrigerator with a list of emergency contacts.
"Make sure your children know who to call in an emergency situation,” says Jessica. “Make sure they know names, phone numbers, addresses. I go over it with my kids all the time."
The New Jersey State Office of Information Technology has information on how to talk to children about 911. It can be found at the
state website.
