A River Vale house went up in flames Tuesday afternoon killing eight cats and injuring one other, officials said.
The fire broke out just after 3:30 p.m. at a home on Highland Avenue. In a post on social media, the River Dale Fire Department said when crews arrived, fire was visible from the rear of the house with heavy smoke billowing out from multiple parts of the structure. Firefighters determined that the bulk of the fire was located in the kitchen and an attic area.
Although the residents managed to escape the fire safely, several cats perished.
"There were no injuries , however, multiple cats inside the home perished despite rescue efforts. It has been confirmed that 8 cats passed and 1 cat went to the Animal Hospital for treatment," River Vale Police Capt. Josh Wisse told News 12.
Mutual aid crews from Old Tappan, Westwood, Hillsdale, Harrington Park, Park Ridge and Closter assisted River Vale firefighters along with help from fire departments in Pearl River and Orangeburg, N.Y.
Officials say the fire remains under investigation.
