The Surflight Theater has reopened on Long Beach Island after a two-year hiatus.
Audiences were treated to a performance of “Footloose” as the first show since the theater’s return.
The venue has been around for over seven decades but has seen its share of obstacles in recent years. In the past six years, the venue had a fire, was severely damaged by Superstorm Sandy and declared bankruptcy twice before closing in 2015.
Actors who started their careers at the venue say they are glad to see the theater return to its roots.
"It does focus on that youth," said state veteran Andrew Foote. "And to get back to that core mission for the first summer back is just fantastic."
“Footloose” is the first of five shows that are scheduled for this summer. The venue is also already planning holiday performances for December.
