A fire swept through a laundromat and apartment building in Jersey City overnight, killing one person and injuring several others.
The fire broke out around 3:30 a.m. at the corner of Summit Avenue and Mercer Street.
Two adults and two children were found unconscious, suffering from burns and smoke inhalation.
Despite efforts by firefighters to administer CPR, one of the victims died. One child is being transported to Cooper Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston for treatment of serious burns.
Three firefighters were treated for burns, and one was treated for smoke inhalation.
The preliminary investigation suggests the fire started in the kitchen of a second-floor unit. The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Jersey City Fire Department are working to determine the cause of the fire.
The Red Cross is providing emergency financial assistance to at least 18 people affected by the fire.
