Firefighters responded to a four-alarm fire on Broadway near 74th Street in North Bergen today, and some were still on the scene battling the blaze into the evening hours.
The fire broke out in the densely populated Hudson County town in a three-story building at around 1 p.m. The bottom floor of the building is commercial, while the top two floors are residential.
Thick black smoke and flames could be seen rising from the building. Officials say firefighters were making progress as they worked to contain the blaze, but not before the fire spread to two attached buildings. One woman had to be rescued by firefighters from inside the building and was rushed to a nearby hospital. At least one firefighter was also taken by ambulance, after suffering a fall. Both are expected to make a full recovery.
The fire caused major traffic delays in the area, as some roads nearby were shut down.
Aimee Focaraccio, of North Bergen, asked neighbors for clothing on a Facebook page she created in response to the fire. Just hours later, she had collected more than 10 bags filled with donations.
The North Bergen Concerned Citizens group is collecting donations for those forced out by the fire.
