A four-alarm fire in a building in Paterson has displaced four families, fire officials said.

The flames were reported around 11:30 p.m. Monday at a three-story building on Main Street.

The fire spread through apartment units and a shop located below them. Paterson fire officials said everyone from the affected building and an adjacent building were able to escape. 

One person was hurt from slipping and falling on ice while evacuating. A firefighter was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, officials said.

The building, which collapsed during the fire fight, will be demolished later Tuesday, fire officials said.

News 12 New Jersey’s Van Tieu reported that the fire displaced at least 15 people from four families.

As of 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, Main Street remained closed from Ward Street to Ellison Street while crews continued to douse hot spots.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear.
