The 38 people evacuated from a Newark apartment building due to health concerns earlier in the week remain locked out of their apartments Thursday.

The South 17th Street building has been fumigated, and the Department of Environmental Protection is testing the building's air quality. Dozens needed medical attention after experiencing allergic reactions in the course of an hour Tuesday.

Pending the air quality test, the Newark Health Department can go inside and check the building's living conditions. Residents will not be allowed in until that is done.

Property manager Wanda Rodriguez says a number of pests have swarmed the building.

"I was told it was an infestation of mice, feces, ticks, fleas, bedbugs ? and it's all due to cleanliness," she says.
