19ds agoThe annual Salute to Ships took place at Fort Hamilton as visiting vessels made their way into New York Harbor Wednesday morning, marking the start to the 36th Annual Fleet Week.
A parade of ships passed under the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and into the harbor and as they pass through, the base will be giving them a warm welcome by way of their annual salute.
The event kicked off at 8:30 a.m. with the Veteran Corps of Artillery of New York firing off blank rounds from their cannons as the ships entered the narrows.
Fleet Week is a time for New Yorkers to meet sailors and members of the Marines while also experiencing a weeklong display of public demonstrations.
The Navy says more than 2,300 service members are expected to come to town. There will be multiple ships on display at piers in both Manhattan and Staten Island.
