(AP) - Officials are looking at whether an infestation of fleas and mice in a Newark apartment building may have caused allergic reactions in dozens of residents.
Several people were hospitalized earlier today complaining of swollen eyes, rashes and skin irritation.
A spokeswoman for the City of Newark says there have been past complaints about pests in the building. She says the exact cause of the residents' ailments has yet to be determined.
Earlier in the day environmental officials were unable to find any evidence of hazardous materials, chemicals or other pollutants in the building or the surrounding area.
Thirty-eight families have been temporarily relocated to a nearby YMCA while crews fumigate and clean their building.
