Several employees of the Jersey City Incinerator Authority have been charged with allegedly taking bribes.
Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop says the bribery has been going on for years. He says investigators started a lengthy wiretap and surveillance operation after receiving a tip about the crimes.
Investigators found three employees of the authority were allegedly taking bribes in a scheme involving construction debris. The employees were supposedly picking up construction site debris and garbage and combining it with city garbage in exchange for the bribes.
The three were arrested and charged with official misconduct. More charges could be pending.
