Three people are dead and two are injured after an early morning multi-vehicle accident in Newark, police say.
The crash happened at around 2:30 a.m. on the northbound overpass that links McCarter Highway to several other major roads.
Police say three cars were involved in the accident, including a four-door Chevrolet, in which three female occupants were killed. A male passenger of the car was treated and released from UMDNJ.
The driver of a second vehicle - a four-door Acura - and a woman in a third vehicle - a four-door Toyota - were also treated at UMDNJ and released.
The accident shut down Route 21 near Route 1 and 9 by Newark Liberty International Airport for several hours.
