Police have arrested a 27-year-old man who they say raped a 12-year-old girl inside NYCHA’s Cooper Park Houses in Williamsburg.
According to investigators, it happened around 5:45 p.m. Thursday as the girl walked into her building near Morgan and Skillman avenues.
Police say Eric McMichael grabbed her, pushed her to the ground and forcibly raped her before running away.
McMichael faces multiple charges including, rape, burglary and sex abuse.
The girl was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition as of Friday night, officials said.
Sources told News 12 the girl was walking into the building with groceries when she was attacked.
Residents told News 12 doors are often left propped opened or have broken locks.
News 12 reached out to NYCHA for information regarding those conditions but was referred to the NYPD for any information.
Residents there said Friday night they are on edge, especially those with young children and girls around the same age as the victim.
“Right now, I don’t trust anyone," said Janet, the mother of two high schoolers who live on the building. “Right now, I drop them off, I pick them up after school. They don’t go anywhere without me.”
