Hertz business booms as air travelers look for alternatives amid air flight reductions

Flight reductions imposed by the Federal Aviation Administration are having travelers consider other modes of transportation, like rental cars.

"I can definitely see there's more people who want to rent out a car recently, and I know a bunch of other people who also were just trying to avoid the airport and just try and drive,” said Ani Venkatesh, a Florida resident.
Venkatesh says he wouldn't rule out a rental car at his connecting airport when he makes the journey back to Florida in a few days.
“There's definitely a shot because it's way closer to my destination and maybe just be easier to drive,” he said.
He's not alone.
Rental car company Hertz says one-way reservations picked up over 20% on Thursday and Friday when reflected on last year's numbers.
New 12's Tony Caputo caught someone Friday morning who was still getting to her destination later that night.
"I'm not flying but I have to get back Utah, Salt Lake City, for work by Tuesday,” she said. “I'm renting a car and I'm driving cross country."
Hertz' CEO released the following statement:
“We join the airlines in urging Congress to swiftly pass a clean continuing resolution and restore certainty for travelers. Every day of delay creates unnecessary disruption. We are grateful to Secretary Duffy who we know is working hard to bring leaders together to end the shutdown.”
Another alternative, Amtrak, also chimed in on the conversation with the following:
“Amtrak is operating full service and is ready to welcome travelers with a smooth, flexible, and convenient experience. As air travel becomes less reliable, more riders are choosing the convenience of rail — a trend that began before the government shutdown and any flight cancellations. With strong Thanksgiving demand already underway, we encourage early booking to ensure guaranteed reservations.”
