A driver was found shot in the head inside a vehicle on the George Washington Bridge Tuesday evening, prompting a major police investigation that brought traffic to a standstill during the height of the commute.

The incident unfolded around 7 p.m. on the westbound upper level of the bridge. First responders were initially dispatched for what was reported as a one-car crash, but officers found the victim unresponsive inside the vehicle with a gunshot wound to the head.

Port Authority police said the victim was taken to Englewood Medical Center. That person’s condition was not immediately made available.

No other injuries were reported.

Authorities have not released the victim's identity or said whether the victim was a man or woman. Police also have not announced whether they are searching for a suspect.

The investigation has since concluded, and the George Washington Bridge has been cleared and reopened for the Wednesday morning commute.
