The search is on for a suspected killer after a man was shot to death in Bridgeport on Monday.
Police responded to the intersection of Cottage Street and Park Avenue around 9 a.m.
When officers arrived, authorities say they found 48-year-old Nelson Manuel Batista, of Bridgeport, lying on the street next to his car, suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest.
Batista was rushed to St. Vincent's Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police say.
Bridgeport Police Detective Jeffrey Holtz says the intersection was closed for about two hours while the Major Crimes Unit processed the scene.
As of Monday evening, no arrests have been made.
"This is devastating... you don't want to see another life get lost," Councilman Jorge Cruz says.
Cruz represents the 131st district where the shooting occurred. He says violence in the area has gotten out of hand.
Cruz says there was a stabbing around the corner just a few days ago.
"Somebody died, and if you witnessed something... say something," Cruz says. "Call the anonymous number of the Bridgeport police department, and work with them to catch this killer."
Officials say it's the city's eighth homicide of the year.
“I’m praying for this gentleman’s family," Cruz says. "I’m praying that the family finds some peace."
