Crews are working to repair a large sinkhole that opened up in Elizabeth, leading to street closures in the area.

According to a spokesperson for the City of Elizabeth, the sinkhole on Reid Street was caused by the recent heavy rain that blanketed the area over the past week.

“Due to the recent heavy rainfall, a sinkhole developed on Reid Street after the roadway deteriorated. There have been no reported injuries,” the spokesperson told News 12.

As a result, Reid Street is closed to traffic and vehicles are being diverted away from the area. The sinkhole is located directly in front of multi-family homes and apartments.

It was not immediately clear how long repairs would take or how long the roads would be closed.
