A Paterson man has been charged in connection with a New Year's Day shooting that left one man dead and another injured in Paterson, authorities said.

The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office and Paterson Police Department announced Thursday that David Lawrence, 41, is charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Police responded to the area of Market Street and Memorial Drive at about 7 a.m. Jan. 1 to a report of shots fired. Officers found two men suffering from gunshot wounds and both were taken to Saint Joseph's University Medical Center, according to prosecutors.

Authorities said a 36-year-old Paterson man died from his injuries. A 55-year-old Paterson man was treated and released. Investigators say Lawrence was the shooter.

He was arrested without incident Wednesday. Prosecutors said they will seek his pretrial detention at a hearing to be scheduled by the court.
