North Brunswick police are urging people to avoid a local shopping plaza Thursday morning after a chemical spill injured at least seven people.
Police sent out an alert about the incident at the Brunswick Shopping Center on Milltown Road. The plaza houses LA Fitness, Dollar Tree, Lidl grocery store and other businesses, including a salon and a bakery.
"Early indications are that this appears to be a chlorine leak, which is contained at this time, Deputy Police Chief Brian Hoiberg told News 12.
According to Hoiberg, North Brunswick police, fire and EMS crews responded along with a hazmat team from Middlesex County. Police said seven people were injured in total, and four were transported to local hospitals.
“There are no road closures, however people are being asked to stay away from the Brunswick Shopping Center, specifically LA Fitness, while emergency services operate at that location,” Hoiberg told News 12.
