Standing-room-only crowd turns out for Inspiration Wharf hearing
Residents packed Manhasset Town Hall to weigh in on a proposal that would redevelop Port Washington's Inspiration Wharf into a mixed-use waterfront community with condos, retail and restaurant space.
A standing-room-only crowd filled Manhasset Town Hall Tuesday night as residents voiced strong opinions about a proposed redevelopment of Inspiration Wharf.
The proposal would transform the waterfront property into a mixed-use development featuring 38 condominium units, along with a restaurant and retail space.
Many residents who spoke during the public hearing expressed concerns that the project would change the character of the waterfront and surrounding neighborhood.
"It offers no open, meaningful space," one resident said during public comment. "It blocks water views from surrounding streets and neighborhoods. It limits the very connection to the water that defines Port Washington."
Others worried the development would bring more traffic, noise and reduce privacy for nearby homeowners.
"Once you start building and attracting more people for more revenue, it begins to get more crowded," said Port Washington resident Antonia Klonowski. "So all the things I left Queens for seem to be chasing me."
Not everyone opposed the proposal. Some residents said the project could help address the need for additional housing in the community.
"A lot of the houses are expensive here," said Port Washington resident Ava Silva. "Having more housing allows more people to move in and boost the community."
The proposal remains under review as town officials continue to gather public input before making a decision.
