Drivers across Connecticut continue to see swings in gas prices as uncertainty remains at the pump.

The average price in Connecticut, according to AAA, is $3.95 for regular. That is down about 30 cents from a month ago but up 5 cents from last week.

Prices in Fairfield County are the highest in the state at close to $4 a gallon. The national average is even lower, at $3.85 for a gallon of regular.

However, prices could be on the way back after President Donald Trump announced plans to reinstate a blockade on Iranian ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

In a social media post, Trump said the United States would serve as the “guardian of the crucial waterway” and repeated his proposal to charge all other ships a fee equal to 20% of the value of their cargo, saying the charge would compensate the U.S. for securing the strait.

With all this volatility, drivers are unsure what price they will find when they pull up to the pump, and that is affecting consumer buying habits. Data from the cash-back app Upside found that when gas prices rose in the first two and a half weeks of March, drivers visited gas stations more often but bought less fuel each time.

Experts say consumers can expect gas-price swings to stick around. At this point, they say to assume the price will be high and shop around.
