New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill signed a law that will force data centers to send in reports on how much water and energy they use. This is part of what she calls her effort to hold them accountable.

While a planning board in Kenilworth unanimously approved a data center, many others New Jersey towns have banned them. Jackson, Stafford, North and East Brunswick have all taken action against data centers recently. Nearly 40 other municipalities have said that they don't want data centers either.

Jackson Mayor Jennifer Kuhn says she reached out to police after receiving several threatening voice mails on her personal business number and her town hall line. Her rival in the heated race for mayor, Elliott Shem-Tov, says those are not from his supporters.

New Jersey is set to receive a payout as Meta has agreed to pay nearly $20 billion to settle claims it got kids hooked on social media on purpose. It's half a billion as the payout is split between nearly all 50 states as they went after Facebook and Instagram. The state attorney general likens it to the big tobacco settlements of the 1990s.
