The New York City Department of Transportation announced that construction on the McGuiness Boulevard redesign in Greenpoint officially started on Wednesday.

The project will implement parking-protected bike lanes from Meeker Avenue to the Pulaski Bridge. It's an extension of the redesign already completed on the southern section of the boulevard.

News 12 previously reported the project broke ground back in 2024 but was halted. Back in August, former Mayor Eric Adams' Chief Advisor Ingrid Lewis–Martin was indicted for allegedly accepting bribes to stop the project.

For years, residents have raised safety concerns about the boulevard, with some crashes ending in tragedy. News 12 previously reported that local teacher Matthew Jensen was killed in a hit-and-run back in 2021.

The New York City DOT says during the summer months there are about 4,000 riders along the corridor. NYC DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn says the goal is to improve safety.

"McGuiness Boulevard should stitch Greenpoint together, not divide it in half. These upgrades will make it safer and easier for parents and children to cross the street. It'll protect cyclists, reduce reckless driving, and transform what can feel like a highway into a calmer neighborhood street," said Flynn.

The NYC DOT says the project is expected to finish around early Fall.
