Overnight arrests as protests stretch into day six outside Newark detention center

Protests are continuing for a sixth day outside Delaney Hall in Newark, as demonstrators remain gathered around the clock.

Meanwhile, protesters say they are standing in support of detainees inside the facility, where an ongoing hunger and labor strike continues.
Advocates estimate about 300 detainees are taking part, calling for better conditions, access to medical care and the release of people with health issues.
Some protesters are now calling on Gov. Mikie Sherrill to return to the facility after she was denied entry earlier this week.
“I mean, she walked to the fence… and she just turned around,” said protester Catalina Adorno. “Why didn’t she insist?”
In response, Sherrill said the denial of access raises concerns about conditions inside and that the state is continuing to explore next steps.
The Department of Homeland Security has pushed back on claims from protesters and advocates.
Officials say detainees are provided three meals a day, basic necessities and access to medical care, adding the facility meets or exceeds standards of many U.S. jails.
