A routine trip to the laundromat turned deadly in Flatlands on Memorial Day morning.

Police say 41-year-old Kevon Lee was shot multiple times inside the Xpress Laundromat on Utica Avenue around 8 a.m. Monday. Lee, who lived just a few minutes away in the neighborhood, later died at the hospital.

A 68-year-old man was also grazed in the foot and is expected to recover.

By Tuesday morning, the 24-hour laundromat was open for business. Video from the scene showed evidence markers on the floor underneath laundry carts with clothes.

Customers who were inside say the gunfire sent people scrambling for cover.

“I was washing my clothes and then the shots start coming,” customer Philip Denaud told News 12. “It was about 5 to 6 shots. Then we hit the floor and went into the bathroom and locked the door.”

The manager of the laundromat says surveillance video appears to show the gunman running inside, opening fire and leaving quickly.

“He came in, he shot and left the place in less than 10 seconds,” manager Sufyan Alahmadi said.

No arrests have been made. Police have not said what may have led up to the shooting or whether Lee knew the gunman.
