Police investigate racist graffiti found at Mount Vernon school
School officials say the graffiti was removed Monday morning.

Racist graffiti was found at a school building, prompting concern from district leaders in Mount Vernon.
The drawing was discovered at Mount Vernon S.T.E.A.M. Academy and appeared to depict the “Sambo” caricature along with racist words, Superintendent Dr. Demario Strickland said. The symbol has historically been used to portray Black men in a derogatory manner.
Strickland said he first saw the drawing Friday afternoon, and crews removed it Monday morning.
He also shared a message for students who may have seen the symbol on their way into school. “These situations are difficult,” Strickland said. “I just want you to know that racism is alive and well.”
Dr. Strickland also released a statement that said, in part:
"After racist remarks were found graffitied on the exterior walls of Mount Vernon STEAM Academy on Friday, the Mount Vernon City School District opened an investigation to find the person responsible.
The graffiti was removed from the building this morning as soon as supplies were available. The District regrets that our students, families and the Mount Vernon community saw these vile remarks. Our schools are a safe place for all, and there is no room for racism or any kind of bigotry or discrimination."
Police are looking into the incident.
