A major water main break has forced the closure of a section of Clifton Avenue in Clifton, causing roadway damage and service disruptions.
The break was reported around 9:30 a.m. near the intersection of Clifton Avenue and Paulison Street, where water initially flooded the roadway before crews were able to stop the flow.
While the water is no longer flooding the street, a large hole remains in the roadway. Crews working with the Passaic Valley Water Commission are repairing the broken pipe underground before road repairs can begin.
Officials say much of the street is damaged, and the area will remain closed to all traffic for an extended period.
Residents in the surrounding area can expect low water pressure or a loss of water service.
The utility is advising residents that once water service is restored, any discoloration can be cleared by running cold water from the lowest tap in the home until it runs clear.
A timeline for full water restoration has not yet been released, and officials say repair work is still in the early stages.
