Work is getting underway along Flatbush Avenue in Downtown Brooklyn as the city moves forward with a major project to speed up bus service.

A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled Tuesday at Times Plaza, where Flatbush Avenue meets Fourth Avenue.

The project will add new bus lanes down the center of the street. The goal is to keep buses out of regular traffic so they can move faster and more reliably.

The changes will impact the B41, one of Brooklyn’s busiest bus routes, used by more than 100,000 riders each day.

Signs of the work are already visible. Parts of Flatbush Avenue are torn up, with orange barriers set up along the middle of the road as crews begin the early stages of construction.

City transportation officials say the work will happen in phases, meaning different sections of the street will be worked on at different times while traffic continues to move.

Drivers may see lane shifts and delays as the project moves forward. Riders, however, are expected to benefit from shorter and more consistent travel times once the work is complete.

The project is focused on the stretch between Downtown Brooklyn and Grand Army Plaza.
