A Lewisboro police officer has been released from the hospital after nearly a week in the burn center Intensive Care Unit.

Although he was bandaged up, Officer Joseph Briggs appeared in high spirits, speaking briefly before he left the hospital.

"I just want to thank all of you for coming out here. I do appreciate it," Briggs said.

Lewisboro police responded to a house fire last Thursday at 27 Old Shop Road to reports of two people trapped inside.

Sgt. Andrew Llewellyn and Briggs went into the house, but were met with a "flashover condition." Both officers were brought to the medical center after sustaining injuries.

Llewellyn was released from the hospital that evening, while Briggs remained in the ICU.

"He had second-degree burns that will, fortunately, be healing on their own. He will be continuing to follow up with us as an outpatient so we can monitor his healing," said Dr. Rachelle Lodescar, a burn surgeon at Westchester Medical Center.

Llewellyn and Chief Dave Alfano escorted Briggs out of the hospital, alongside an estimated 200-plus first responders from various municipalities.

"He's at an all-time low right now with the pain and suffering. Seeing everybody here is just tremendous. It builds spirits," said Alfano.

The fire took the lives of 93-year-old Noel Rae and an unidentified person.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
