Gateway Project funding talks underway as deadline approaches

Negotiations are underway to keep the Gateway Project moving forward as the rail tunnel effort connecting New Jersey to New York City is expected to run out of money next week.

More than 200,000 commuters rely on the aging tunnels each day, according to project officials.

The Gateway Project is designed to build new rail tunnels into New York City.

President Trump could restore funding that was cut during the government shutdown.

Members of Congress are now in talks with the White House to address the funding shortfall, Rep. Josh Gottheimer said.

A billion dollars has already been spent, largely on machinery and the completion of the Tonnelle Avenue Bridge. In anticipation of the funds running out, contractors are winding down work, which will result in a thousand workers across five sites losing their jobs.
