Police say the driver of a stolen BMW took off Tuesday afternoon and crashed on Route 66 after being spotted by police. The driver and passenger took off on foot as police pulled up to the scene.

Eyewitness Matt Reardon watched the events unfold as he was in slowed traffic through the construction zone on the highway by the Home Depot.

“BMWs have those daytime running lights, and I saw that and saw him moving quickly, and it caught my eye,” said Reardon.

Police say the 20-year-old driver, Alan Gonzales, and his 18-year-old brother Felix, both of Asbury Park, were in the BMW X3 when they passed a patrol vehicle. The BMW came back stolen from South Orange on Dec.16. When the officers began a U-turn to pull them over, the driver sped off, going around slower traffic in the oncoming lane before losing control and flipping.

“I thought I was in a movie,” said Reardon.

Police took the two men in custody after a short chase along the tree line. Neptune Township police say Alan Gonzalez was charged with receiving stolen property, obstruction, resisting arrest by flight, unlawful possession of a weapon (a box cutter), possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose and numerous motor vehicle summonses. He additionally had an active warrant for his arrest from Freehold Township. Felix Gonzalez was charged with receiving stolen property, obstruction, and resisting arrest by flight South Orange PD was contacted to further its investigation.

“You brace yourself. There’s nowhere to go. You can’t go forward, can’t go back the side had construction and this guy was coming up on the left. Stay still and hope for the best,” added Reardon.

Police tell News 12 they also found the brothers traveling with a stash of stolen license plates. Both are now locked up at the Monmouth County jail pending a detention hearing.
