Federal oversight of the Newark Police Department is now over.

A judge ended the consent decree on Friday, which has been in place for the last nine years.

The Justice Department says Newark has completed the required changes in stops, searches and use-of-force. Federal officials praise the progress the department has made and say they will continue partnering with Newark on public safety.

The end of the federal oversight is leading to new calls for civilian review boards statewide.

State Sen. Angela McKnight says Newark’s civilian review board helped build trust and she wants other communities to have the same oversight.
