A woman crossing Central Avenue in Westfield was struck and believed to be seriously injured Monday morning by a NJ Turnpike Authority vehicle, police say.

The crash was reported at 8:24 a.m. and heard by Amoco employees across the street.

"I hear a boom, the guy hit that lady too hard," said Tony George. "It's terrible. I feel really bad for her.”

"We just called 911," said Diego Timba. "They came immediately."

Police say the 57-year-old Kenilworth woman was treated at the scene and transported by a New Jersey State Police helicopter to University Hospital in Newark, a Level 1 trauma center.

It was not immediately known if any criminality was involved in the crash.
