Barnegat police are warning residents about a scam happening around the town.

Police say that some residents have been getting phone calls from someone claiming to be from the Barnegat Police Department. The resident is told that they have been the victim of identity theft and are then asked for personal information.

Police say that just because the caller ID says that the call is from Barnegat police, doesn’t necessarily mean that it is.

They say that if someone calls claiming to be from the police, and you are not sure, call the department back and ask for the officer by name.
