Police and utility leaders across New Jersey say they're seeing an increase in criminals posing as utility workers to gain access to residences.

They say the typical scam involves two people appearing as workers and knocking on your front door. One person distracts the resident, while the other goes inside to steal money and other valuables.

There are some precautions you can take to keep yourself safe. Authorities say to always ask for company-issued identification, never share account numbers and never give the scammers money.

Authorities say if you suspect someone may be a utility imposter, close and lock your door and call 911. You should also contact your utility company to confirm whether service work is scheduled in your neighborhood.
