As August marks Breastfeeding Awareness Month, a local Monmouth County support group is stepping up efforts to assist new mothers in managing work-life demands alongside breastfeeding challenges.
A first-time mother, Emily Apgar says adapting to work life after becoming a parent involves considerable adjustments. "I split my time off, so while I'm at work, I'll be pumping to continue supplying breast milk for her," Apgar said.
The Breastfeeding Wellness Center at Anne Vogel Family Care, one of the only in-person support groups in Monmouth County, has opened its doors to any mother needing assistance.
"In New Jersey, we have seen an expansion in maternity leave and paternity leave and that really does help parents transition into their role of being parents," said Tara Murphy, a nurse and lactation consultant at the center.
This support is crucial in facilitating parents' decisions to breastfeed. New mothers have the right to pump at work for the first year of a baby's life.
Mother Kathryn Norton acknowledged the significant strides made in formula preparation, but breastfeeding was a priority for her. "There's so much that goes into it, like what you put in your body, your baby's getting, so you have the choice to make the right decision for your child," she said.
Lactation consultants advise parents to discuss their need to pump with their managers before reentering the workforce. They also stress the importance of reaching out for support if necessary.
"If you want to, just keep going. Seek out the help that you need and just keep going," Norton advised fellow mothers.
