Sources confirm to News 12 that Rep. George Santos is expected to be in federal court Wednesday to face criminal charges.

The Republican freshman congressman's indictment is sealed, and charges are unknown at this time.

As News 12 has reported, federal investigators have been looking into Santos' campaign finance filings and other claims.

Santos has been a controversial political figure before he was even sworn in after a New York Times report revealed he fabricated much of his resume.

Political strategist Mike Dawidziak says Santos will likely remain a sitting member of Congress throughout his legal proceedings. He says that could change if he is found guilty.

"If there is a conviction it would be unprecedented for him not to be expelled or to resign," Dawidziak says. "Most sitting congresspeople, when they have gotten to this level of trouble, have resigned from office."

Two of the three other Long Island congressmen reacted to the news of Santos' pending indictment.

Rep. Nick LaLota released a statement saying, "These charges bring us one step closer to never having to talk about this lying loser ever again."

Rep. Anthony D'Esposito released a statement saying, "As a retired NYPD detective, I am confident the justice system will fully reveal Congressman Santos' long history of deceit, and I once again call on this serial fraudster to resign from office."

News 12 reached out to Santos' office for comment but have not heard back.

According to the Associated Press, Santos said he had no knowledge of any impending charges when he was reached by phone Tuesday.
