Investigators seized around $450,000 and arrested 20 people in gambling raids throughout New Jersey and New York Tuesday.
The suspects are believed to have been running an illegal gambling operation out of bodegas. The ring was allegedly taking bets from patrons on the lottery in the Dominican Republic.
Investigators say the lucrative operation was netting up to $200,000 a week. The alleged profits were found in a Bronxville apartment and confiscated. No weapons or drugs were found in the raids.
The suspects have been charged with illegal gambling and conspiracy. More charges are expected, and the immigration status of one of the suspects is still being checked.
Alleged players will not face charges as it is not illegal to bet on the lottery. Winners, however, could face tax evasion charges if caught since the payouts were tax-free.
