Hudson County police say two statues of the Virgin Mary were stolen in one day, devastating the owners and the communities.

The first statue was stolen from a New York Avenue home in Union City. The owner, Gladys Rodriguez, says the statue was a Mother?s Day gift from her son that she received 11 years ago. Her husband noticed it was gone on Monday.

A smaller Virgin Mary statue was taken from a home on Second Street around the same time, police say.

Police are surprised by the thefts because the statues can?t be pawned for much money.

Rodriguez says her Virgin Mary was utilized by the whole community as a religious icon and a place of prayer. She also believes it saved her son?s life by inspiring him to give up drugs. She spent Thursday praying for its return.
