New Jersey State Police say that the crash happened around 5:45 a.m. when a Honda Accord struck another vehicle in the left-hand of the southbound side of Route 440. That crashed caused a chain reaction leading to several more vehicles crashing into each other. Two of the vehicles caught on fire and soon became engulfed.
Police have identified the victims as 34-year-old Royena Berterand, of the Bronx, who was driving an Infinity sedan and 46-year-old Scott Koy, of Parlin, who was diving a Hyundai Sonata.
The other people hurt had injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, according to police.
Route 440 was closed for about four hours following the crash.
