An 11-year-old New Jersey girl will be playing the lead role in “Annie: The Musical” alongside the original Broadway star.

Washington Township resident Echo Picone will be playing Annie in the musical based off the popular comic strip series.

“Everyone’s always complimenting my hair and they’re always like, ‘You should play Annie. You have the hair.’ And I’m like, yeah, hopefully,” Picone says.

Picone will be staring alongside Andrea McArdle, who plays the role of Miss Hannigan. McArdle originally played the role of Annie on Broadway.

“It’s kind of like full circle. And many Annies could turn into Miss Hannigans,” McArdle says. “I know I’m in touch with that side of myself.”

“Annie” runs from Nov. 2 through Nov. 18 at the Axelrod Performing Arts Center in Deal.
